Bill Caption
Relating to a defense to prosecution for the offense of possessing or carrying a weapon in or into the secured area of an airport.
Fiscal Notes
No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.
Bill Analysis
HB 554 would add a defense to prosecution for individuals with a licensed concealed handgun who have entered a screening checkpoint within a secured area to immediately exit the screening checkpoint without being arrested.
Vote Recommendation Notes
HB 554 would encourage security to use discretion and reasonable judgement in protecting Americans from security threats. It is unfortunate that we need a law to allow people to leave a screening area without an arrest for carrying licensed handguns, but due to an increase of sensationalized arrests at screening checkpoints HB 554 enactment is warranted. This bill protects the individual liberty of Texans and has our support.
