Bill Caption
Relating to consideration by the board of trustees of a school district of parental complaints concerning student participation in extracurricular activities.
Fiscal Notes
There is no significant fiscal implication to the State.
Local Government
Districts that currently incur costs related to complaints about student
participation in extracurricular activities that do not involve
violations of Chapter 26, Education Code, may experience savings.
Bill Analysis
HB 2151 would amend Education Code to provide that the board of trustees of a school district is not required to address a
complaint that the board receives concerning a student's participation in an
extracurricular activity that does not involve a violation of a right under Chapter 26, Education Code.
Vote Recommendation Notes
This bill affirms the principle of a limited government by removing a requirement that the board of a school district must handle complaints about a student's participation in an extracurricular activity. An individual school campus is capable of handling these issues as long as there is no violation of parental rights. For this reason, we support HB 2151.
