This legislation would amend the Government Code to provide the full state contribution for insurance coverage with the Employees Retirement System (ERS) Group Benefits Program for state military forces called to active duty that serve beyond 60 days.
This legislation only pertains to certain missions. Currently, the only operation this legislation would impact is the Operation Strong Safety II mission.
We support this legislation as it supports individual liberty in personal responsibility. Under the proposed legislation, members of the National Guard currently serving a deployment longer than 60 days, in state, would be eligible to be considered a full-time employee and eligible for insurance if they already are not enrolled in another program.
This legislation supports our troops who have put the burden of responsibility protecting us at the Texas-Mexico border, to be eligible to receive healthcare benefits if they do not already.
