Bill Analysis

HB 1663 would amend the chapter entitled “Arraignment” within the Code of Criminal Procedure related to the compensation of counsel appointed to defend. This bill would allow a defendant who, during their confinement or period of community supervision, has come into additional financial resources to now pay for their legal counsel to be taken to court to pay any unpaid portion of the cost of legal services.

Vote Recommendation Notes

HB 1663 intends to recover costs for state offered services that a defendant has used and is currently able to pay. This is within the confines of limited government. We support this bill.
