Bill Analysis

This legislation would amend government code to require state agency with more than 500 full-time employees, to designate an already full-time employee of the agency to serve as the veterans liaison for the agency.

This bill would require every agency to deem an already existing employee to become a veterans liaison with the purposes of recruiting veterans to open positions within the relative agency. This legislation is providing a specific preference to some agency employees, for being a veteran, that other qualified employees are not entitled to. We oppose this bill, as it goes against the individual liberty principle, for excluding non-veterans in hiring considerations. However, it does not affect our liberty principles, so we are neutral on HB 1457.
