Bill Caption

Relating to the maintenance of information entered into a fee record.

Fiscal Notes

No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

The bill would amend the Code of Criminal Procedure to make assessed criminal court costs uncollectible if the fee has been unpaid for ten years, the defendant is deceased or is serving a life sentence in prison for life or for life without parole if the criminal court in which the proceeding was held would make a finding for that purpose.

Bill Analysis

The above fiscal note adequately and accurately describes HB 1181.

Vote Recommendation Notes

We support this legislation on the grounds of limited government because the government does not need to waste time and resources attempting to collect court fees from deceased inmates or from inmates serving life in prison who clearly lack the means to pay the court costs.
