Fiscal Notes
No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.
Bill Analysis
The bill would amend the Election Code to determine the residence for voter registration purposes.
The acceptable criteria in this legislation would include
- Address on a driver’s license issued to
the person by the Department of Public Safety.
- Address on a personal identification
card issued to the person by the Department of Public Safety.
- Address on a license to carry a
concealed handgun issued to the person by the Department of Public
Safety.
- An address corresponding to a residence at which
the person receives mail.
- The address the person claims as a homestead in
this state.
- Registration address of a vehicle the person
owns.
Vote Recommendation Notes
We support this legislation for it's commitment to personal responsibility. This bill would allow anyone with multiple state issued forms of identification to register to vote, as long as it is not expired. It also gives several caveats for those citizens who have not obtained state issued identification to be eligible for voter registration if they provide legal affidavits. We appreciate the tenors this legislation embraces, specifically the adage "trust, but verify."
