Bill Analysis

Summary: Parties have noted that correctional boot camp programs are now closed because research has proven them to be ineffective and costly, with high recidivism rates among participants. Additionally, parties have expressed concern that the Texas Department of Criminal Justice still operates a 400-bed facility that is utilized at less than 10 percent of capacity and an eight-bed female facility that has no participants at this time. SB 345 would abolish the State's correctional boot camp program.

Analysis: SB 345 would reduce the size of government by eliminating an ineffective and unused program. We recommend voting YES on SB 345.
