Summary: SB 1467 would include firearms manufacturers, firearms accessory manufacturers, and ammunition manufacturers as part of Government Code Chapter 481 to include firearms within Texas' economic development initiative. This legislation would allow the Texas Economic Development and Tourism Office to identify businesses in these areas and attract them to doing business in Texas through economic incentives provided by statute or from the Texas Enterprise Fund as negotiated by the Governor's Office.
Analysis: This legislation would provide subsidies as targeted incentives to entice business related to the firearms industry, including manufacturers of firearms, ammunition, and accessories to relocate to Texas. Recently other states have passed laws that have made it more difficult for these businesses to operate and many are looking for opportunities to relocate to other states. Texas already has a fantastic business climate and should be an attractive candidate for businesses looking for a place to relocate. While we very much support the firearms industry, we do not support targeted subsidy programs that give preferential treatment to favored industries at the expense of other industries that do not get the same treatment.
Because SB 1467 interferes with the free market, we oppose this legislation.
