Bill Analysis

Summary: SB 1436 would modestly increase the cost of the Judicial Retirement System of Texas Plan One, a retirement plan administered for judges in Texas. SB 1436 would increase the cap on service retirement annuities from 90% of a judge’s salary to 100% of that salary. SB 1436’s goal is to incentivize experienced judges to serve in Texas courts until retirement.

Analysis: SB 1436 would increase the unfunded liability of this retirement system, albeit by a very small amount. We oppose this legislation as an expansion of government.
