Bill Analysis

Summary: HB 1843 would extend the statutory provision for The University of Texas at Austin to limit automatic admission for the top 10% of students in their class for up to 75% of enrollment capacity. Furthermore, the legislation would no longer allow a university to consider automatic acceptance based on race or ethnicity.

Analysis: HB 1843 would minimize an underlying entitlement of automatic admission to a university based on academic ranking, race, or ethnicity and make the admission process more equitable for all students. We support HB 1843.
